Treating Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol and drug dependency are treatable illnesses that affect individuals and their families. Therapists at Behavioral Associates are committed to providing state-of-the-art, evidence-based treatment for people in all stages of their recovery. Outpatient treatment gives the individual an opportunity to interact in a real world environment, which helps the individual gain insight into what determines their substance use.

What is the recommended treatment?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) combined with biofeedback and neurofeedback is the recommended treatment for addressing drug and substance addiction, abuse and withdrawal. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy may be used to help patients successfully navigate major triggers (bars, social settings, family gatherings).

Why is Neurofeedback so effective?

Neurofeedback treats the brain disorder of addiction by retraining a person’s brain. Teaching the brain how to be calm, focused, and relaxed helps a person think more clearly and rationally. As stressful incidents are a major cause of relapse, neurofeedback training helps build a solid base on which to build recovery. Integrating neurofeedback training into one’s treatment program yields higher rates of success and lower rates of relapse than treatment programs without neurofeedback, for all age groups. More than 85% of patients who train with neurofeedback state they feel more focused, less impulsive and overall more control. Conducting a qEEG brain scan at the beginning of treatment will allow your psychologist to further analyze the state of your brain and create an individualized neurofeedback training program. Subsequent scans will be administered in order to track progress and update treatment.

What are the next steps?

Patients must first complete an initial consultation with Dr. Robert Reiner (Adults) or Dr. Heather Davidson (Teens). After the initial consultation, you will be set up with one of our expert staff members based on your goals, availability and treatment type. Treatment may require you to complete an MMPI-2 personality testqEEG brain scan or other psychological testing to fully understand your history and diagnosis.  Same and next day appointments are typically available Monday through Thursday.
