Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG)

What is a qEEG Brain Scan?

A Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) is a useful assessment that helps in diagnosing various conditions including ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety and more. The qEEG brain scan produces a series of visual maps that are analyzed in order to understand what is happening in the brain, where it is happening and how problematic the issue is. After the brain scan, your licensed clinician will devise an individualized treatment plan that often includes neurofeedback training. Neurofeedback, a form of evidence-based brain wave training, is a medication free approach that allows patients to train specific areas of the brain as identified during the qEEG brain scan.  Subsequent brain scans are conducted every 2-3 months alongside treatment in order to monitor progress and measure results.

Typical qEEG Brain Profiles

Example: QEEG of a healthy brain compared to common diagnoses.

What is the process?

The qEEG is a non-invasive scan that is safe for children, teens and adults. The scan is performed during a 45 minute session by placing an electrode cap on the patient’s head, which is prepped with special conductive gel. The computer generates geographically displayed images which is compared to published databases to check for deviations from normal patterns and evaluated as to whether it contains any patterns known to be associated with clinical conditions.  In addition, for each of the 19 cortex regions, several measurements are taken which show how closely or loosely they compare to brainwave activity in the other 18 regions. The scan allows your licensed therapist to analyze your brain’s current function and create an individualized treatment protocol for neurofeedback and other interventions.
