Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG)
An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is the measurement of electrical patterns at the surface of the scalp which reflect brainwave activity. A Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) is the detailed analysis of the EEG known as “brainmapping”. A qEEG can be performed at Behavioral Associates to help with diagnosis of various conditions including ADD/ADHD as well as assist in neurofeedback.
The qEEG is useful in helping improvement of mental functioning as well as awareness of brain states. The derived qEEG information can be interpreted and used to evaluate brain function and track changes due to neurofeedback or other interventions. Neurofeedback, a treatment utilized at Behavioral Associates, allows the patient to learn to control and improve brain function. The qEEG is very useful tool for successful neurofeedback as it allows us to track the changes in brain functioning that occur.
The qEEG is performed through sensors that are attached to the inner surface of a cap that is prepped with special conductive gel and put on the head of the patient. The qEEG does not utilize any sort of external radiation or radioactive injection as all readings are taken at the surface of the patients scalp. The computer generates geographically displayed images which can be compared to published databases to check for deviations from normal patterns and evaluated as to whether it contains any patterns known to be associated with clinical conditions. In addition, for each of the 19 cortex regions, several measurements are taken which show how closely or loosely they compare to brainwave activity in the other 18 regions.
There are specific neurofeedback protocols that aim to specifically decrease or increase certain frequencies at certain locations on the brain. This enables the qEEG to give valuable insight into the area of the brain that may need to be strengthened.
Prior to beginning neurofeedback, a careful patient history is taken and qEEG is conducted. A qEEG is an advanced diagnostic tool that provides the doctor with a detailed brainmap which is used along with the symptom profile to design treatment protocols.
Behavioral Associates is one of the few practitioners currently offering qEEG as part of the screening process for ADD/ADHD patients. The qEEG takes much of the subjectivity and guess-work out of making the diagnosis for ADD/ADHD and gives the doctor the ability to formulate a more targeted treatment plan.
